The American Continent is divided in North, Central and South. South America is the part of the continent situated between the parallels 35°E and 82°E, and the meridians 13°N and 57°S. Is formed by twelve independent countries and one french department, the French Guayana. All those countries, with the exception of Suriname and Guyana, had obtained their independence during the first quarter of the last century. Till now, they have been considered third-world countries. In spite of all these, in some of those countries, acoustics research and development have arrived to an acceptable level. In the paper, an account of the activities related to acoustics and vibration is presented. The most important research centers and laboratories, the national acoustical societies, the universities that offered acoustics courses and the acoustical reviews, are enumerated.
