In recent large scale quiet retiming of freight movements projects, conventional noise monitoring and predictions about sound levels and propagation have been taken. However, complaints from local residents are regularly received by city administrations concerning freight transportation noise, in particular at delivery and servicing points (i.e. during delivery and servicing activities). There is thus a recognised need to develop evaluation methods and new indicators for delivery sound environment, from the viewpoint of soundscapes. The aim of this study is therefore to develop automatic sound source identification techniques, algorithms, and procedures for the main delivery sounds including heavy vehicle and equipment noise, for instance reversing (i.e. warning) signals, cargo doors, and tail lifts; to develop a survey method for obtaining people's subjective evaluation of delivery sound environments, integrating a method for surveying and classifying various sound sources in terms of masking effects, and also integrating a survey method for obtaining the context characteristics relating to the delivery sound environment, including visual settings; and based on the above results, to develop algorithms for the calculation of soundscape quality of delivery sound environments.
