The purpose of the paper is to show the results of both inductive and resistive damping in pressure acoustics for two different geometrical situations. Depending of the geometry, the reflective or resistive elements will have one or more eigenfrequencies with maximum attenuation. This study represents an investigation of the COMSOL Finite Elements Method (FEM) capabilities of simulating the pressure wave propagation and transmission loss in a muffler for an internal combustion engine. The results indicate that such a design tool can be successfully used in other applications concerning noise reduction such as exhaust nozzles or car mufflers that have a significant impact on the engine.
