PROFESSOR SHON FOWCS WILLIAMS AND AEROACOUSTICS: WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

Professor Shon Ffowcs Williams is one of the true pioneers in the field of Aeroacoustics with his wide ranging contributions that continue to have significant engineering application. This session will highlight the continuing relevance and beauty of contributions by Professor Ffowcs Williams, his many research students, and his close professional friends. It will include papers, inspired by Professor Ffowcs Williams, on topics such as: noise and vibration caused by unsteady flow; aeroacoustics of supersonic flight; quieting of commercial aircraft propulsion and airframe systems; underwater, rotorcraft, and open rotor noise reduction; and the use of anti-sound for noise control and stabilization of aeromechanical systems. This legacy of important and interesting problems continues to challenge and stimulate each new generation of aeroacoustics practitioners, who in turn provide even deeper understanding and wider spread application. The session will also be a gathering of researchers to honor to Professor Ffowcs Williams in his eightieth year.
