STANDARDIZED METHODS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF COMMUNICATION HEADSET EXPOSURE IN THE WORKPLACE

This paper reviews different standardized methods of assessing communication headset exposure in the workplace with a special emphasis on an indirect calculation method recently specified in the latest revision of Canadian Standard CSA Z107.56. The calculation method has been introduced as an alternative to specialized measurement procedures in an effort to promote a simpler survey method that stakeholders in occupational health and safety or hearing loss prevention could readily apply in the field using widely accessible equipment. This method and the other procedures specified in CSA Z107.56 are described as well as their relationships to other national and international standards.
