New solutions are currently being investigated in order to improve the capacity of existing mobile radio systems or to design spectrally efficient new ones.In this work1 we focus on multibeam antennas(a technology that is also referred to as"switched beam"),which can be reasonably considered for application to existing systems,such as GSM and DCS1800.This can be viewed as a first step towards full SDMA,that is likely to be introduced at a later stage.The purpose of the work is to evaluate,by soft-ware simulation of a system based on GSM/DCS1800 technology,the capacity improvement that may beexpected by introducing multibeam antennas.
