A satellite multibeam phased array antenna for 30/20 GHz transmit/receive high rate time division multiple access (TDMA) links was designed to match high gain, beam to beam isolation, and double polarization requirements. The proposed design also takes into account the mechanical and thermal constraints of the European OLYMPUS platform. It exploits the scanning capability of phased arrays without great mechanical constraints; in the wideband satellite case, 3 spots are simultaneously steered down to 3 Earth station at 500 Mb/sec. It has good polarization purity due to the use of a direct radiating array; such a design provides the suitable beam to beam isolation for two adjacent cross polarized spot beams. It shows suitable gain performance with a reasonable number of elements; less than 290 elements result in a minimum gain of 45.4 dB at 30 GHz over any point of the service zone.
