Design of RF generator-load systems at high power typically follows one of two standard philosophies: 1) a low power controlled frequency oscillator and power amplifier driving a matched transmission line (the so-called 50 Ω technology), and 2) a power oscillator in which the load is part of the "tank" circuit. Economies of scale are difficult or impossible to achieve with 50 Ω technology though the operating frequency is stable. Stable operating frequencies are difficult or impossible to achieve in standard power oscillator designs though economies of scale are easily obtained. This paper discusses techniques which may be used to stabilize the operating frequency of power oscillator designs.
