Hydrogen-free plasmachemical vapour deposition offers new prospects to the optical fiber preform synthesis. The SPCVD-process has been applied to the fabrication of erbium-activated optical fibers with an increased concentration of the activator. A new fiber type, nitrogen-doped silica core fiber, has been obtained. The technological details, optical characteristics and possible applications of the nitrogen-doped silica fibers are discussed.
