The 7Na_2O-23B_2O_3-70SiO_2(wt%) glasses adding rare-earth oxide (Y_2O_3, La_2O_3 & Nd_2O_3) were prepared and heat-treated. The term 'chemical durability' was used to express the resistance offered by glasses towards attack by aqueous solution. The chemical durability was determined in a systematic way for melted glasses and phase-separated glasses. The effect of phase separation on the chemical durability of glasses was studies. The surfaces of uncorrosion glasses and corrosion glasses were examined with the infra-red reflection spectra (IRRS). The mechanism of enhancing the chemical durability of glasses with increasing rare-earth oxide content was discussed.
