The advanced ram air (ARA) parachute represents a major performance gain over the ram-air inflated parafoil as well as all othr high-glide parachutes. ARA glide ratios-the ratio of lift to drag - are in some cases double those of comparable parafoils. The ARA utilizes a closed, swept leading edge to affect substantial reduction in drag as well as measurable increase in lift. Parachute glide ratios well in excess of 7:1 have been recorded. This paper presents many of the engineering advances made in the ARA since development test data were first published in 1986. The ARA is in current use as a highglide air vehicle for the U.S. Army's Damocles Autonomous INtelligent Submunition. The ARA has also been demonstrated by test parachutists and is in advanced engineering development for use by special forces for covert insertion and other high glide requirements.
