Growth and physiological characteristics of planted loblolly pine and red maple grown in pure and mixed stands

Loblolly pine and red maple were grown for five years in pure stands and 50:50 mixtures with tall fescue or under maintained weed-free conditions on the upper Piedmont of Virginia. By the end of the fifth growing season, relative size of both specieswas dependent on stand composition and herbaceous cover. Although red maple was more suppressed by tall fescue, high survival under these conditions will likely allow the eventual development of a larger red maple component in mixed stand as herbaceousvegetation continues to decline in conjunction with the development of an overstory.
