The efficacy of NonDestructive Evaluation (NDE) is an integral part of the structural integrity of modern flight systems, yet often receives little more than superficial quantitative assessment. This paper describes the statistical nature of the inspection process and reviews the fundamental metric of quantitative NDE -Probability Of Detection (POD). Also presented is an overview of statistical techniques for measuring POD, mathematical models for describing its behavior, and some aviation industry initiatives to measure NDE reliability.
