A model of the current source inverter (CSI)-fed induction motor drive is developed using a new variable speed drive simulation package CASED. This model includes rectifier, inverter and induction motor dynamics. The drive speed control is based upon indirect field oriented control (FOC). Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the power of CASED as a drive simulation tool and how FOC achieves high dynamic performance from the traditionally low performance CSI-fed variable speed drive. The FOC control algorithm has been implemented on a transputer based drive development platform. Experimental results captured from this implemented system verify the analytical model.
