The Navy's Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel Number 9 (Tunnel 9) located at the White Oak, Maryland site of the Dahlgren DIvision Naval Surface Warfare Center has the capability to perform testing in which a protective shround is separated from a full-scale interceptor forebody. In addition, analytic capabilities exist to dynamically model the shroud separation process, Current facility capabilities include constant hypersonic flow conditions that can duplicate actual flight dynamic pressures up to 85 psia for 200 milliseconds. Data generated during the separation event are digitally recorded onto various data acquisition systems at rates up to I million samples per second per channel. Photographic coverage from three orthogonal planes records the event on 16mm film at frame rates up to 4000 frames per second and on video at rates up to 2000 frames per second. The shroud modelling capability integrates nonlinear, large deformation finite element analysis with aerodynamic pressure calculations to predict shroud movement and deformation, pressure distribution over the shroud, and imparted forces to the forebody of the kill vehicle.
