Measurements of structural power flow have been used to quantify the sound radiation of gearbox generated tones by the wet part of the shaft and by the propeller of a frigate. The whole procedure required structural power flow measurements at sea, inboard transmission measurements on the shaft under quiet conditions and measurements of transmission and radiated sound on a sound range. The applied procedures are described and some details and results of the power flow measurements are discussed. Conclusions are that the measurement of structural power flow on a rotating propeller shaft is practicable and that the use of structural power flow as a path strength descriptor is viable under normal conditions at sea.
