Research into and development of new materials is currently being carried on in many countries for high speed aircraft systems, as is exemplified in work being done by the National Aeronautcs and Space Administration and the European Space Agency. This problem has led to the recent emergence in Japan of the new concept of functionally gradient materials This paper attempts to present a method of production for functionally gradient materials of greater thickness by means of an expression operation involving a mechanical separation of solids and liquids, that is to say, by filtration and consolidation procedures. It examines and discusses how this expression technology can be used to produce a gradient meterial over 10mm in thickness more simmply and cheaply than hithorto.
