This paper shows the results of investigations on soot formation or, more precisely, soot growth in a plug flow reactor as a function of well-defined conditions of temperature, stoichiometry and residence time. Measurements of soot concentrations(by gravimetry), particle sizes, temperatures and Concentrations of stable organic and inorganic gas species are performed. The measurements are summarized in correlations describing the corresponding influences on soot growth rate and final soot yield.For an application of those correlations from the plug flow reactor as a calibrated" model for technical flames, extensive field measurements in free turbulent jet diffusion flames are performed. Variation of local temperatures, carbon concentrations(i.e. mixture fractions), gas species concentrations, soot concentrations, soot yields and growth rates along the axis of the flame are shown and compared for two flames with different exit gas velocities, i. C. exit Reynolds numbers, in order toexemplify possible influences on soot content and emission of this flame type.
