A simple method was developed to obtain high resolution FTIR spectra of powder samples at low temperatures. The method was used to study magnetic ordering in the cuprates R$-2$/Cu$-2$/O$-5$/ and R$-2$/BaCuO$-5$/ (R - rare earth or yttrium) related to high-T$-c$/ superconductors of the 123 type. Diffuse transmittance spectra due to f-f optical transitions in the intrinsic R$+3$PLU$/ ion or Er$+3$PLU$/ probe were measured at 2 - 120 K employing BOMEM DA3.002 FT spectrometer.
