The results of transient and steady-state studies into the feasibility of an extended 22 kV distribution system are presented. The study relates to the need to supply farming communities on the Molopo River with electricity. The feasibility of using the existing Wessels 66 kV/22 kV substation was investigated. The proposed scheme requires a 22 kV backbone of over 300 km, and tee-offs which bring the total length of line to over 1000 km. The installed capacity will be approximately 4 MVA, but the anticipated maximum demand is only one third of this figure. All studies were performed using the PSS/U program of Power Technologies Incorporated, running on an IBM PC-AT. It is concluded that, provided the loading of the system is neither too low nor too high, the system will perform adequately.
