The conventional linear induction motor (LIM) transportation system consists mainly of one-dimensional reciprocating motions. Therefore, if switching is required, two methods are conceivable. One is to stop the vehicle temporarity and rotate it in the switching direction by driving a turntable, and the other is to horizontally shift the flexible transportation line to the object switch line. An experimental facility constructed for test purposes consists of a speed measuing device and two lines, one for straight running and the other for switching the running track. The authors analyze the relationships between track width, switch track radius, switch angle and length of switch track. The theoretically calculated characteristics are compared with experimental ones.
