CAE simulation tool selection criteria for today's ASIC designs

Designers and managers are usually required to make selections of CAE simulation tools in preparation for a new ASIC design start. An often arduous task, as many as three or more vendors can be asked to present their products and demonstrate (either via evaluation or benchmark) the ability to match a set of selection criteria. The author has participated in many of these demonstrations and can attest to the lack of focus on some core simulation issues. Although the business, integration, ease-of-use, and process/methodology issues are all very important; it is necessary to return to a few simulation basics to ensure they are included in the selection criteria. Failing to do so could result in the selection of a set of tools only able to simulate a design under unrealistic circumstances (such as fixed temperature and/or voltage). Even worse, the design cycle could be extended due to lack of simulator capacity or performance. It is essential both designers and managers are sure the overall selection criteria called for in a 'corporate evaluation' includes these core issues important for their job.
