1. INTRODUCTIONThe diffraction and guidance of the light waves by periodic dielectric structures has been the object of extensive study in the fields of optics for many years. These periodic structures play an important role in the fields of holography, integrated optics, and spectroscopy. Dielectric surface-relief gratings which are typical of these dielectric structures have been extensively studied and formulated by various approaches in recent years. For instance, the modal-matching method,1 the finiteelement method,2 the modal-expansion method,3 the integral method,4 and the differential method5-9 are well known as rigorous analyses.
