An advanced high energy VAWT (Vertical Axis Wind Turbine) is being developed by CENEMESA of Spain in cooperation with FloWind Corporation. The objective of the program is to develop a commercially competitive design that maximizes energy output in a wide range of wind distributions yet maintains the rated torque and power output of the existing FloWind 19m VAWT (F-19). This will permit the use of many proven components from the existing F-19, reduce the development time and cost and provide an economical way of upgrading the F-19. With the help of computational codes, the optimization of the new rotor has been performed by examining various combinations of the major rotor configuration parameters. The parameters examined include spanwise blade chord variation, blade section profile, operating speed, rotor diameter, blade mass distribution, blade stiffness distribution, mast-to-blade attachment stiffness, and upper bearing restraint.
