The need for good data to support the design, analysis and maintenance of modern avionics systems is pointed out. Three paradoxes associated with maintenance aids are identified and discussed. A program for performance-oriented tracking of equipment repair, called PORTER, is described that was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of a maintenance-tracking history system that includes serial tracking by LRU number, by aircraft tail number, by job order number, by data, etc. The PORTER database includes built-in-test (BIT) information, information from the avionics status panel (ASP) latches, and readings from the elapsed time indicators (ETI) built into the LRUs to record how long the box itself had actually operated.
