Researchers From China have made significant advances on the development of HTSE process for hydrogen production. The design of the systems relies on high temperature heat input such as from a Generation IV nuclear reactor . The high temperature gas-cooled reactor-pebble bed module project (HTR-PM Project) in China aims to build a 200 MW modular HTR commercial demonstration power plant in around 2017. The project is supported by the government, in the framework of the "national mid to-long term science / technology plan" for the period of 2006-2020.The HTR cycle has an outlet temperature of 750°C-1000°C which can support the heat requirement (about 800°C) of nuclear hydrogen production. The high temperature electrolysis (HTE) process uses a modular stack design, which is flexible and suitable for various scales of hydrogen production.
