The chemical composition of the ASTM A 387 Grade 91 steal was optimized through laboratory tests from the standpoints of creep strength, toughness sod weldability. This Grade 91 steel was then manufactured by making the most of thecharacteristics of basic oxygen furnace process (BOP) combined with secondary refining and unidirectional solidification processes. The steel was clean and had uniform distribution of chemical composition. The steel showed sufficient strength to satisfy the ASTM and ASME requirements and exhibited excellent toughness in both base metal and welded joints. The steel had also good resistance to cold cracking.This steel is highly reliable and cost effective for fabricating the steam generator of fast breeder reactor.
