The basis of the design philosophy for a lightweight pressure vessel or pipeline door closure (the band-lock door closure) is described. The design procedure includes both static and fatigue considerations. For the static analysis the housing issplit into four sub-structures. A simple method for classifying the resulting stresses as primary or secondary is described. An approximate, but reasonably accurate fatigue analysis can be performed using stress concentration factor data for a simplercomponent. The predictions are compared with experimental and detailed finite element calculations. Thus, an indication of the design procedure is presented.
