The airflow in the cylindrical expansion-chamber mufflers into which an inlet pipe or a tail pipe was inserted, respectively, were visualized by spark-tracing and smoke-wire methods. The patterns of the main stream in these mufflers can be broadly divided into not-diffusing jet, reattaching flow and the midway appearance between the above flows. They correspond to the frequency characteristics of flow noise generated secondarily in the mufflers.
