In the DPS1500 Packet Switching System an optimal use of communication resources and a high degree of reliability is achieved by using a datagramtype internal protocol that allows packets and other information units to be routed independently. After a general presentation of the DPS1500 system,the netgram protocol, its main characteristics and the types of information transfer for which it is used, as well as the procedures involved with the transport of user data are discussed. Finally, the netgram technique is compared to the virtual circuit technique for intra-network communication.
