The next decade will offer considerable challenges to the world tinplate industry. There are rapid and major technological developments taking place both in the methods of manufacture of tinplate and in the can-making industry which is the principal market. Packaging is important to the well-being of nations, yet it is an area which is subject to increasing and often unwarranted pressures from environmental and legislative bodies. This paper discusses these factors and outlines ways in which the tinplate industry is responding to the present challenges. Recent innovations are described which will lay the foundation for future development of the industry and enable it to take advantage of the world-wide market opportunities.
