At the Delft University of Technology a group of scientists deals with the project "Computer Aided Design of Mechanisms". The activities concern both synthesis and analysis of link mechanisms. The synthesis procedure of link mechanisms is based on a theory, published in 1958 by the author. Firstly the types of mechanisms are selected which are able to generate the corresponding harmonics of the goal function. Secondly the dimensions of all selected mechanisms are calculated. The synthesis computer program is called TADSOL (= Type And Dimension Synthesis Of Linkages). A catalogue of mechanisms collects the necessary informations for synthesis and analysis of all mechanisms involved in the procedure. The catalogue must also be used for interpreting the results of the approximate synthesis procedure. After the first design cycle the mass distribution, centers of gravity, moments of inertia, dimensions of bearings etc. are known. Then the analysis program is started to carry out the kinematic, kinetostatic and dynamic analysis of the link mechanisms driven by a linear actuator or a 3-phase induction motor. The analytical procedure is based on the idea, that the discretized description of the kinematics of kinematically indeterminate structures, as given in the finite element method, is also a good starting point for the numerical treatment of the analysis of link mechanisms, as published by K. van der WERFF. The computer program is called PLANAR (= Analysis of Planar Mechanisms).
