Developments in instrumentation and digital computers have improved the precision and efficiency of the field testing of soil-machine systems. This increases the value of field tests in defining the relative performance of two or more machines or designs and in improving our understanding of soil-machine system performance. The requirements and procedures for paired comparison and system performance tests are described and examples given. The use of the Students t test and regression analysis in analyzing field test data is discussed and applied to field test data. Procedures used for the field testing of soil machine systems such as tractors and implements are explained and sample results reported. Developments in vehicle instrumentation, telemetry and digital computers are also described and applications cited.
