The environmental preservation is one of the most important concerns for the development in the all sorts of industrial products. Especially, the exhaust gas regulation has been severely limited in the world. It is not an exception in a hydraulic excavator (HE) development. Therefore, from the view point of the effective energy resources utilization, it is strongly demanded that the simulation process can accurately estimate a digging performance before the prototype machine test. Then, a simulation process of the digging performance is proposed using a discrete element method. At first, authors define the payload per the applied energy as productivity. The productivity is affected by the tip trace of the bucket, the shape of the bucket and the soil conditions. Next, it is established the digging simulation model using DEM and the tip trace generation procedure. In this paper, several case studies are performed using the simulation model in order to understand the effect from the tip trace against the productivity. As the results, the tip trace for the most effective productivity is indicated.
