The purpose of this paper is to present a new model dedicated to vehicle off road mobility evaluation. This model, based on previous classical models, highlight two major improvements. The first one is related to soil characteristics identified with plate sinkage test whose results are taken into account using theory and a numerical resolution method. In order to put in evidence the advantages of this new model, results obtained with it are presented, for different types of layered soils, corresponding to some superficial soils configurations. The second advantage of this new model is a slip-sinkage relationship which takes into account the sinkage due to the slippage phenomenon for fine grained (clay, silt) and coarse grained (sand) soils, on the basis of experimental results carried out in the field. Comparisons between numerical and experimental results obtained on ETAS test facilities, with a four wheel drive vehicle, are presented. All this work, carried out in the French military test center ETAS, led to the development of a soil-wheel and a soltrack interaction model which improve off road performances previsions on a large panel of soils, especially for layered soils, for which Bekker models are not always convenient.
