摘要

Hong Kong’s urban landscape has been regarded as one of thedensest city in Asia due to its unique topography, largepopulations, and urban planning policy. With land area1102 ğ‘˜ğ‘š~2 , only a quarter of land is developed to cater toalmost 7.5 million citizens daily life and activities in thisscarcity of land. According to the census data in the mid of 2019,the land population density is around 6940 persons per ğ‘˜ğ‘š~2. Ifwe calculate the population per street block, the number mayhigh as 400000 – 600000 persons per ğ‘˜ğ‘šô€¬¶ in some area (Yuenand Yeh, 2011). Considering the concentration of built-up areasin Hong Kong, an efficient and safe circulation space for bothpedestrian and vehicular is vital. The book “Cities withoutground: A Hong Kong guidebook†describes Hong Kong’s urbanlandscape that the pedestrian does not need to travel on theground, supported by its underground and overgroundpedestrian network. (A.Frampton, C.Wong, J.Soloman, 2012)This urban design and planning model, namely grade separationpedestrian system (GSPS) or multilevel circulation, successfullycirculates the 7.5 million citizens every day by creating a safe, efficient and comfortable walking environment. This modelcreates a new kind of urban space parallel to those conventionalurban spaces, such as the streets in the urban environment. Themultilevel circulation also creates independent pedestrianfacilities such as the pedestrian footbridges or the undergroundpedestrian tunnels. It has also integrated into building design asa comprehensive pedestrian network development.
