By analysing the combination of configurationand application patterns in relation to the vertical arrangement, nine figures of eave expression were identified of which sixwere discussed as rhetoric of eave expression: Expressive Mass,Controlled Transition, Inviting Frontality, Distortion, Flat Stackingand Prolonging Approach. Although translated into a new historicaland socio-political context, architectural expressions of eavesrefer to those of traditional expressions on a formal and/or spatiallevel. This proves, that eaves have remained their role as animportant element in Japanese architecture and still inherit a highlyrepresentative character. Therefore, the performance of eavesextend beyond being a device to address environmental demands, contributing to support and represent local and national identities. In that sense, by reinterpreting eaves, architects of contemporaryJapan were able to respond to the intellectual challenges of merginga traditional vocabulary with the accompaniments of modernization.
