Realization of Mobile Internet Streaming Multimedia Applications

Streaming real-time multimedia traffic over the Internet is gaining momentum. However, successful realization of multimedia applications in a highly mobile environment presents many research challenges. The mixtures of wireless technologies and deployed networks are expected to force 3G+ and 4G wireless systems into heterogeneous, all-IP network configurations providing worldwide access, seamless roaming and interoperability. Future multimode mobile terminals will roam from different in-building private networks, into public networks and then into wide area or satellite networks. In this paper, various proposals and techniques for mobility are briefly analyzed in an IP-based network architecture, and a path location threshold based access scheme is introduced focusing on the migration of 2G/3G and 4G networks with private and public wireless LAN "hot-spots". QoS issues in the proposed architecture are described.
