Intellectual Property Rights and Globalization An Overview of University Patenting

Nowadays, knowledge is a salient product which is based on social wealth generation. Knowledge production demands some intellectual property tools in order to protect, to make use or to sell this resource. An interactive and systematic process of research and development (R&D), traditionally enhanced by universities, firms and government has fostered knowledge production. In spite of this, we suggest that the patenting processes of university products is generally limited compared to that of industry given the largely noncommercial nature of R&D in both developed and developing countries.
