Within the European Community the elderly population is growing,and consequently, there has been an significant increase in the need forthe provision of assistance to carers, with family carers in generalplaying a central role in most activities of informal care in thecommunity. This type of care is based on a strong liaison betweeninformal carers, the professionals and the frail, elderly or disabledperson(s) who are the focus of care. Research has shown the support forthese informal carers maximises care competence and provides value formoney with respect to the delivery of care, by reducing the need forunscheduled hospitalisation of the frail, elderly or disabled personthrough planned professional interventions
