Structural properties of texture elements in a surface havesuccessfully been applied to characterize textures. For this purpose, histograms of a texture element's properties are used. The compactnessproperty of an element has been used for characterization. Thecompactness depends upon it's perimeter. A novel method based onperimeter contribution, to compute the value of the perimeter ispresented. The perimeter value computed using the proposed method iscloser to the actual, than the perimeter value computed using theconventional methods. The value of perimeter using the proposed methodis also more consistent than the conventional methods. The value ofcompactness using the proposed method is not only closer to the actualvalue but also more consistent under affine transformations. Theinvariant histogram of compactness using the invariant value ofcompactness characterizes the texture invariant of scaling and rotation
