It has previously been recognised that it is possible to predictthe shape of the sea surface (sea waves) in a deterministic fashion overperiods of 20 to 30 seconds ahead in time. The resulting future sea waveinformation allows predictive control strategies for ship operation tobe developed in various applications. For use with freely operatingvessels remotely sensed sea surface data is required. The sample valuesarising from such measurements are highly nonuniformly distributed inspace and this has considerable ramifications with respect to the signalprocessing requirements. An adaptive strategy is described for themeasurement and data processing problem and a readily computablespectral measure of nonuniformity is employed to provide decision makingguidelines within the adaptive strategy. Simulations of the remote seasurface measurement problem are performed in order to assess theeffectiveness of an approximation technique in relation to thenon-uniformity measure
