This paper provides a theoretical characterization of the multihopwireless communications channel without diversity, wherein intermediateterminals relay information without employing spatial diversitytechniques. Two channel models are proposed and developed: one whereeach intermediate terminal digitally decodes and re-encodes the receivedsignal from the immediately preceding terminal and the other where eachintermediate terminal simply amplifies the received signal from theimmediately preceding terminal. These models are compared, throughanalysis and simulations, with the single-hop reference channel on thebasis of probability of outage and probability of error. Both modelsachieve significant gains over the single-hop reference channel, withthe amplified relaying model matching the performance of the decodedrelaying model despite noise propagation
