Integrating design for environment into the product design ofSwitching Platforms

This paper describes the way environmental issues are beingintegrated into the product design of the Switching Platforms unit ofNokia Telecommunications. Switching Platforms is implementing design forenvironment by integrating environmental issues into its product designthrough influencing points found in the product process. Therefore thesame people will make the decisions in design for environment thatdetermine the overall product design decisions and environmental issueswill be considered side by side with other requirements. To determinewhat to do in design for environment, idea generating workshops werearranged for the product design experts with the help of an electronicmeeting system, GroupSystems. Check lists will be formed from theresults of these workshops. Check lists can be thought of as the heartof their design for environment system. Based on the workshop materialand check lists, metrics will be designed and strategies for design forenvironment set. This paper also contains a section discussing what theyhave learned during their design for environment implementation
