Initial experience in the Snowy Mountains Scheme with the PDA andinstallation and use of permanent capacitive couplers on hydrogenerators

The author describes the initial experiences of the SnowyMountains Hydro-Electric Authority with Ontario Hydro partial dischargeanalyzer (PDA) technology. The factors necessitating modification of thestandard XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable coupler and itsinstallation method are described. Some initial PDA test measurementresults and their interpretation are presented. Comparisons are madebetween PDA and other discharge detector measurements. The significantimprovement in the Authority's knowledge of the condition of itsgenerator stator windings as a result of initial PDA measurements isnoted, and it is concluded that PDA condition monitoring will be animportant tool in future maintenance strategic planning in the SnowyMountains Scheme
