LOCATED in Australia's Southern Alps, the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme was built between 1949 and 1974 to realise two vital goals: to provide water for irrigation purposes and also electricity from hydroelectric generation. The waters of the Snowy and Eucumbene Rivers are diverted to the rich farming areas of the Murray-Darling Basin, and pass en-route through the Scheme's two pumping stations and seven hydroelectric power stations.
