Quantification of End-Uses of Residential Water Consumption: A case study in Galle District, Sri Lanka

Investigation on residential end use water consumption to encounter the water scarcity problems by using alternative sources was carried out in Galle District, Sri Lanka and this was the first ever such study in Galle. Direct metering method was applied for 100 selected households through snowball sampling. Both dry and wet seasons were compared as seasons while urban and semi-urban areas were considered as regional variation. It was found that total water consumption for dry and wet seasons were 124 and 106 L/capita/day respectively. Average total water consumption for urban and semi urban were 125 and 112 L/capita/day respectively. According to seasonal variation, toilet, kitchen (including drinking), clothes washing, bathing and outdoor end use consumption was 18, 23, 30, 34 and 2 for dry season and 14, 18, 30, 22 and 2 L/capita/day for the rainy season while those for the regional variation was 22.5, 25, 28, 32 and 4 in urban area and 15, 18.5, 33, 27 and 1 L/capita/day in semi-urban area. However, it was found that only the toilet and kitchen water usage were statistically significance with the seasonal variation, while only total water usage were statistically significance with the regional (urban and semi-urban) variation.
