Lightning flashes striking a 500 kV transmission lines have been observed using high-speed digital video cameras with the aim of the validations of the electro-geometric model (EGM). Six lightning flashes striking transmission line were observed. In one of the flashes, we observed upward connecting leaders initiated from the transmission line. We estimated the striking distance of the transmission lines from the flashes and compared them with those calculated by the EGM. From the comparison, it was found that the observed-base striking distances were shorter than those calculated by the EGM.
