Dedicated object management system benchmarks for softwareengineering applications

Non-standard database systems have now become available, even ascommercial products. They overcome a lot of the deficiencies ofrelational systems w.r.t. their use in engineering applications likecomputer-aided design or software engineering. Their rathersophisticated functionality especially concerning the manipulation ofcomplex objects makes them highly attractive for engineeringapplications. If used as the central database of a rather complexapplication they could however still become a bottleneck w.r.t.performance. This paper presents a new way to define a special purposebenchmark which enables one to select the fastest database system for aparticular software engineering application. It is argued that existingbenchmarks are not appropriate to support such a selection, because theyneglect important application specific characteristics whichsignificantly influence the database performance
