This paper describes modelling and control of a high speedmanufacturing machine where the control problem involves continuous pathtracking to make a compliant machine tool follow a pre-determined 3-Dprofile. A typical application area is the area of robot arm control inmaterial finishing processes. Open-loop control via a stepper motordrive is compared to closed-loop control using a DC servo motor withposition feedback. In this second configuration, the response of thesystem using a conventional PI controller is also compared with that ofa fuzzy logic controller
